I’ve made one hexie quilt, but only doll-sized! After finishing the other quilt top so quickly, I decided to start working on a hexie quilt using the 2” templates I have. There are only 25, but they’re quite reusable. After making 50 (and starching, ironing, and removing the templates) I started wishing I had paper templates. I looked at some paper punches and I will probably get one eventually, but first I opted for a batch of several hundred precut paper hexies from Amazon. I think I’ll try thread basting using the sew-through-the-template method which I have not yet used. It means removing basting stitches later, but that seems pretty simple. It also means the paper will stay in until the end, so I’ll have to get a punch or more pre-cut papers. I have time to decide.

In the meantime I’m sorting through my scrap bins (sorted by color families) trying to use up any small scraps containing at least a 2.5-3” square. It’s satisfying to use tiny scraps, particularly of fabrics I really like. This will be a scrappy quilt and I’ll probably arrange the hexies in a loose rainbow pattern by color.

This will be a long-term project so I’ll post periodic updates.
